Excerpt
Excerpt The present invention discloses a method and system for providing location-based services to a remote terminal that is connected to various types of communication systems. A tailored request for information is generated with the remote terminal. In addition, a geographic indicator associated with the remote terminal is also generated in the preferred embodiment. The tailored request for information and the geographic indicator are transmitted to a location-based application server. A structured response to the tailored request for information is generated with the location-based application server, wherein the structured response is based on the geographic indicator of the remote terminal. The structured response is the transmitted to the remote terminal using one of several different types of communication protocols and/or mediums.[...] As set forth above, the geographic indicator that is generated and used by the location-based services system is based on a respective geographic location of the remote terminal. In other preferred embodiments of the present invention, the geographic indicator can be defined by a user of the remote terminal. The geographic indicator may be generated by the remote terminal or a base station of the preferred wireless communication system. |

Claims
1
A network device to manage a search query from a mobile device over a network, comprising:
a transceiver to send and receive data over the network; and
a processor that is operative to perform actions, including:
receiving a search query from the mobile device;
parsing the search query into at least one primary search term, and zero or more location modifiers;
if a location modifier is parsed from the search query, using the location modifier to determine a physical location;
refining the search query based on the at least one primary search term and the determined physical location; and
performing a search using the refined search query.
| Relevance | This claim is within the scope of the prior art. The prior art's "location-based application server" is a network device, including a processor, that manages a search query from a mobile device. The "mobile device" is an example of a "remote terminal" as stated in the prior art. The prior art's transmission over one of several different types of communication protocols/mediums encompasses this application's tranceiver, network, and "receiving" step. The prior art's "geographic indicator" is equivalent to this application's "location modifier". The prior art's processing of the request to generate a response based on said geographic indicator (e.g., in its claim 1) encompasses this application's parsing, refining the search query based on the determined physical location, and performing the refined search. |
